The Red Lake District

The area was first discovered by a fur trader in 1777, and by 1790 the North West and Hudson Bay Companies had settled to the area. By 1930 the gold rush had made its mark and the Red Lake District emerged.

The Red Lake District is comprised of five towns, Madsen and McKenzie Island (outlying communities), Red Lake, Cochenour, and Balmertown, the home of the Red Lake Mine.

The weather is generally fair with bright blue skies and lots of sunshine. The days are short in winter, but long and very pleasant in the summer months.

This is Ontario’s Sunset Country, and boasts the best fishing and hunting in the province. Thousands of lakes, beaches, lush rolling forests and abundant wildlife enhance the beauty of the area. Fly-in camps are available for those who want a taste of wilderness. Much of the area is still untouched and is accessible only by air or canoe.

The Red Lake mining district has been producing gold since the 1920’s. Three major mines: Placer Dome’s Cambell Mine, Goldcorp’s Red Lake Mine and Cochenour mines have produced more than 80% of the gold in the region. Red Lake has been a consistent producer for over 50 years. When production from the High Grade Zone (HGZ) comes on stream, Red Lake will over take all its neighbors.
